Retreat enough to hear my own voice
Jenny (in the book How to Do Nothing) makes the case that it is impossible retreat from the world entirely (citing examples of various communes who had tried to do so in the past). Rather she advocates for a refusal-in-place approach.
That you periodically retreat, to enable the necessary distance and time to see what we thoughtlessly submit to.
For myself, I'm taking some sort of muddy approach of sorts with my social media usage.
I'm distancing myself enough so that I can hear my own voice again.
To purposely bar myself from the junk-food type of connectivity, so that if I had something to say or share, I'd have to do it long-hand and reach out to someone with a message rather than a 'share' or a 'like'.
Do you think it's possible to use existing social media platforms in an entirely different way? Is it possible to refuse, but not retreat entirely?
That's my current experiment now ... The next chapter of the book is on the anatomy of a refusal which I'm super excited to read.
What I'm tinkering with in my life right now ...
